Community Development in Manankoro

Manankoro field office

The programme started in 2001 and covers 40 villages in three communes: Sibirila (24), Yinindougou (10) and Kouroulamini (6) with a total population of around 27,000 inhabitants. It aims to strengthen community participation in decision making concerning the planning and implementation of each commune's social, economic and cultural plan for development (PDSEC).

Microprojects for
Young People
in difficult circumstances

This programme started in the year 2000 and in 2004 it received substancial funding from Comic Relief through International Service. Partner organisations in Mali, Togo and Burkina Faso work directly with young people, who are at the centre of each stage of the programme. J&D works with these partners to promote a gender sensitive and youth centred approach.

Capacity Building Unit

Established inn 2006 on the basis of initiatives in Non Formal Education and the Reflect approach, the CBU seeks to disseminate the core values of the organisation (transparence, gender equity, empowerment and participation) through capacity building, networking and the development of advocacy within West African NGOs.

The secretariat for Pamoja West Africa is currently lodged within the Capacity Building Unit.

Preschool Education

The programme (funded by the Stromme Fondation from 2004 to 2008) has supported 40 nursury schools through staff training, equipment and materials, contributions to running costs and health checks for the children. A committee of specialists advises the programme and local sponsors support a number of children from poor families.

Reproductive Health

The programme, funded by MDG, started in 2005 and aims to raise young people's awareness concerning sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS and family planning. 120 peer educators have been trained and provided with contraceptive products and their activites include disseminating information, counselling, home visits, referals to local health centres and talks in local schools.

Community Development in Yanfolila

Funded by MRDF, the programme started in 2007. It aims to contribute to improving living conditions in communities in the communes of Wassoulou Ballé and Gouanan by reducing vulnerability, civic education and support for local gouvernance.

Saving for Change

Saving for Change, implemented in partnership with the Stromme Foundation and Oxfam America, started in 2007. It trains and supports women's groups to organise themselves to save and provide credit using their individual ressources. Activities include regular meetings where savings are deposited, funds redistributed as loans to group members and loans repaid. Field workers are steadily expanding activities to reach women in communities not yet covered by the programme.

Literacy and Health

This initiative constributes to Plan Mali's activities for 2007-2008. Using the Reflect approach 450 women are acquiring literacy and numeracy skills while developing their competence in the areas of health, hygiene and child protection and development in 18 villages in Kita (6), Kangaba(2) and Kati(10).

MDG - Diverse Initiatives

John of MDG and the J&D car The Mali Development Group is a British NGO set up in 2001 by friends of J&D in England to support the activities of the NGO. It funds the Reproductive Health programme among an array of other intiatives, and provided J&D with this vehicle.
